Warner Bros. initially designed a punk-inspired co Warner Bros. initially designed a punk-inspired cover for Van Halen’s 1978 debut album, aiming to align them with the rising punk movement. The artwork featured an aggressive typeface and an awkward band photo, prompting immediate rejection from the group. Edward Van Halen later recalled, “They tried to make us look like the Clash. We said, ‘F— this s—!’” Despite Van Halen’s roots in the Sunset Strip scene, they saw themselves as a pure rock band, not part of the punk trend. After pushback, Warner Bros. scrapped the design and commissioned photographer Elliot Gilbert to capture the band’s raw, electrifying stage presence. Designer Dave Bhang then created the now-iconic winged Van Halen logo, solidifying their distinct identity. However, remnants of the rejected punk branding briefly appeared on the “Looney Tunes” red-vinyl promotional EP before being abandoned. In the end, the album itself—featuring classics like Runnin’ With the Devil and You Really Got Me—cemented Van Halen as a hard rock powerhouse, not a punk act. Recently, one of six rare copies of the rejected artwork, originally sent to Edward Van Halen for approval, sold at auction for $1,500. #vanhalen
