It’s been 13 years since the last Tool album, 10,000 Days, was released. The world — and the way we interact with each other — has changed immensely since then, and comparatively speaking, the band is entering an almost unrecognizable social and political landscape with their latest record. We spoke with guitarist and visual mastermind Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, bassist Justin Chancellor and vocalist Maynard James Keenan about what they’ve been up to over the course of the last decade-plus and about the labor-intensive creation of their new LP. “We’re really hard on ourselves, so we don’t pay much attention to people’s expectations,” Carey offers. “I wouldn’t recommend it to the faint of heart — but it works for us.”
