Mayhem, the Norwegian pioneers responsible for invigorating a global metal scene alongside originators such as Venom, Celtic Frost & Bathory, formed in 1984 & with a long history of tragedy, intrigue & infamy has become a truly revered legend of black metal over the subsequent four decades. A large part of the band’s lasting legacy was established in the late 80’s & early 90’s, when original members Euronymous (Guitar) & Necrobutcher (Bass) welcomed Hellhammer on drums & Dead on vocals, to help shape a new era of darkness, becoming highly influential leaders of the genre in the process; an accolade which has endured to this day. Revisiting the very earliest incarnation of the band & marking 40 years since Mayhem’s cult debut performance, this special limited Record Store Day vinyl release features Mayhem’s April 1985 gig in Ski, Norway, where the band carve their way through cover songs of classic Venom & Celtic Frost in this rare delight for fans. This presentation of ‘Live in Ski’ comes on limited coloured vinyl, featuring an etching on Side B.

Mayhem’s Live in Ski is a standout Record Store Day 2025 exclusive, dropping on April 12 via Peaceville Records. This release commemorates the 40th anniversary of the band’s debut live performance in Ski, Norway, back in April 1985. The 12” vinyl captures the raw energy of that formative gig, featuring covers of black metal forebears Venom and Celtic Frost. It’s pressed on limited edition oxblood-colored vinyl, with an etching on Side B, making it a collector’s gem for fans of the genre .

As an RSD exclusive, Live in Ski will be available only in participating independent record stores on April 12. Any remaining stock may be sold online afterward, but quantities are limited, so it’s best to act quickly .
