Negative Spaces is Poppy’s sixth studio album and her fourth album on Sumerian Records. Fans unofficially referred to the album as Zag leading up to its release due to Poppy seemingly teasing a “part 2” of her previous album Zig; however, the title was revealed to be Negative Spaces on September 23, 2024.
Much like her previous two albums, Poppy sought to work with a brand new group of collaborators, recruiting old friends Jordan Fish (formerly of Bring Me The Horizon) and Stephen Harrison (formerly of FEVER 333) to help write and produce. She had previously worked with Harrison on her 2019 single “Scary Mask”, which also featured FEVER 333, and toured with Bring Me The Horizon later that year.
The album returns to the metal and hard rock sound Poppy introduced with her 2020 album I Disagree, after making a diversion to pop music on her last album Zig, and comes after collaborations with metal bands Bad Omens (“V.A.N”) and Knocked Loose (“Suffocate”) earlier in the year. On this project, however, Poppy explores a more radio-friendly alternative metal sound, while retaining influences from metalcore and nu metal. Its sound is heavily shaped by Jordan Fish’s trademark production style, which is most associated with his former group Bring Me The Horizon.
Four singles were released from the album: “new way out”, “they’re all around us”, “the cost of giving up” and “crystallized”, with the latter two being a double single release.
